Life Happens

I. Love. To-Do. Lists.

My to-do lists are expansive; they usually include lunch breaks, chatting with people, and all kinds of mundane things that definitely don't need to be on a to-do lists.

What can I say?

I like to have all my ducks in a row because what I love even more than to-do lists themselves is being productive.  Scratching things off my to-do list, whether it's fun with a friend or homework for school, is satisfying for me. However, sometimes things throw a wrench in my plans.

This weekend I got sick. I'm not sure exactly what I had but I was showing the first signs of bronchitis. I was stuck in my room for four days and had to cancel all kinds of excursions, ranging from Thursday's classes and flower picking with a friend. It wasn't my favorite thing. However, the extra time gave me the opportunity to reflect.

Being sick is never fun, but it happens. Similar to life, sometimes it just happens.

We can't always control our circumstances. We never know when someone could get in a car wreck, or how that test is gonna go, or if our medical screening will come back with a positive outcome. You can't always predict life. However, you can control how you respond to your circumstances.

I didn't feel good and I had a lot to do. But, rather than getting stressed about my never ending to-do list I chose to rest. Life happened and I responded in a way that brought me more peace than being able to scratch things off.

That wasn't even the best part. Life is not how it affects you but how you affect life and, more importantly, how you let it affect those around you.

When you're sick you can't just sleep all day, you do have to do a little something at some point.

I wrote letters. I wrote letters, to very important and influential people in my life. I wanted to encourage them when "life" happened to them. I was able to take a stinky situation for myself and turn it into a positive situation for someone else.

I was productive in a different way. I didn't get many pressing things done. However, some may argue that matters of the heart are the most pressing of all. I was able to encourage and to feel and experience life in a more authentic way... as cliché as that sounds.

So, yes! Plan your life away! Fill your to-do lists up with adventure and excitement. But, make sure to leave some room to take a moment to rest. This way, when the hard times do come you'll be able to handle them with a sound mind and hopefully do something positive not only for yourself but for those around you too.
