Digital Compass

What is your online identity? Are you a traveler? Are you a student? Are you a christian? Are you a partier?

None of these things are bad. However, is it true? Does it reflect who you are? Are you proud of the person you are online?

These may seem like silly questions. However, what we consider silly sometimes gets pushed under the rug to think about at a later time.Like a meme. You’re scrolling through twitter, you see something funny and then you get over it and move on. Although, this is a little more important than a meme or a nostalgic vine. It’s who we are and all too often our generation forgets that what we put online can really impact our future.

Online I am Kristie Rose. However, depending on where you see my profiles you may not always get the same version her. I never lie. However, I just choose to share certain things on different platforms. For example, on instagram I am a happy traveler, a student and a sister. On twitter I’m an encouraging christian and here I’m transparent. My readers see all parts of me. I figure if you take the time to read, you probably care to know.

I am all these things all the time in real life, just not online.

Boundaries will always be important, especially online and it’s up to us to decide what those boundaries are. I make it a point to share what my followers are after. On instagram, I want my followers to see fun and exciting things. While on Twitter, I want people to have easy access to love if they can’t find it anywhere else and here I want people to get the whole story so maybe it can help them in their own lives.

That’s who I am, but who are you?

You may not be a traveler and you may not be a student. You might not be happy. It’s okay to be who you are, in fact, I encourage it. However, online it’s open for everyone to see… forever, even when your accounts are private.

So, who do you want to be? What are your passions and deep desires? Where do you hope you end up in life 50 years from now? What are your followers after? However, most importantly, you. What are you after?

Social media was created as a way to connect and share. It’s unique and should be used to it’s full advantage. However, it’s also important to protect yourself and those around you. All actions come with consequences whether they’re good, or bad.

So, set your compass towards who you hope to be and follow it. Create boundaries and stick to them. Understand that who you are is important and valuable. Know that what you have to offer is greatness and most importantly, what you put out there for the whole world to see will not only affect you but them as well, so make it good.
